An enchanted forest grows in the secret glade enclosed within the borders of this spectacular rug, inspired by a treasure currently on loan to New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. The original “Tree-Pattern” carpet dates back to the early 16th century and is attributed to artisans of Northwestern or Central Persia. Its eleven colors are dominated by a dark red inner field filled with a rich pattern of flowering trees, cypresses, vine-stems and flowering shrubs, all aligned in the same direction. In our modern interpretation, the visual is likewise anchored by tall cypress trees that send their spires across a voluptuous scarlet ground, filled with a delightful profusion of flowering greenery that sparkles with jewel tones of emerald and gold. While the original has a wide 3-part border with arabesque stems on a dark blue ground, the modern rug has a narrow golden edge enhanced with delicate blooms and tendrils for a lighter effect that keeps the eye focused on the magnificent central design.
